An electric animal fencing is a psychological barrier that keeps farm animals in and wild animals out, even over long distances. A pulsed electrical current is sent along the fence wire from a power source called an electric fence charger (also known as an energizer). When an animal touches the fence it completes the circuit and receives a short, sharp but safe shock. After the initial shock, the animal learns to avoid the fence and will not attempt to enter it again.

Virtual fencing is a new and developing technology that remotely maps and controls livestock grazing behaviour without the use of fixed fences. Using GPS sensors, it enables the user to control and limit the movement of animals over large areas. Each animal is fitted with a collar which emits an audio cue and if the animal gets too close to a virtual boundary it sends an electric shock. Some studies have found that cattle need 4-6 electric shocks before they move away when hearing the audio cue, although individual variation is high. It is also recommended that a water source is placed within each paddock or in close proximity to the boundary, as animals may be reluctant to walk far from a familiar water source to reach a new one.
